La casata giunse infatti in Italia nel X secolo, con un Rinaldo, ed acquistò numerose terre nella Marca d'Ancona. Con i re Svevi, la famiglia passò nel Regno di Napoli, ottenendo un vasto stato negli Abruzzi, ove era compresa la terra di Acquaviva, da cui ha tratto il nome. Antonio Acquaviva ebbe da Carlo III di Durazzo le contee di S. Flaviano e di Montorio nel 1382 e dal Re Ladislao il ducato d’Atri nel 1393. La casata fu aggregata al patriziato napoletano nel Seggio di Nido dal 1507 ed ascritta all’antico libro d'oro delle famiglie patrizie napoletane.
