Antica e notabile famiglia ferrarese, di chiara ed avita virtù, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. L'origine di tal cognominizzazione, al dir di autorevoli genealogisti, andrebbe ricercata nel personale, di matrice germanica, "Aldoardus". Secondo alcune ricostruzioni araldiche, la famiglia ha agnazione comune con il nobile casato bolognese Aldrovrandi ed infatti, mancando negli Armoriali uno stemma proprio degli Aldovardi, si è soliti attribuirle l'antico blasone degli Aldovrandi: "D'azzurro, alla riga accompagnata in capo da una rosa, e in punta da un capriolo, il tutto d'oro". In ogni modo, la famiglia Aldovardi, nel dispiegarsi dei lustri, sempre è riuscita a produrre una serie di uomini che hanno reso illustre il suo nome, nei pubblici impieghi, nelle professioni liberali ed ecclesiastiche e nel servizio militare.
