El apellido A. es patronímico; esto es, formado derivado del nombre perteneciente al padre u otro antecesor, y aplicado al hijo u otro descendiente, para denotar en éstos la calidad de tales. Significa, por tanto, "hijo o descendiente de A.", porque es patronímico del nombre A., que viene, según algunos etimologistas, de la voz goda "altfuns", compuesta de "alt", noble y de "funs", guerrero, belicoso. Hay muchos autores que dicen que el nombre A. significaba también, entre los godos, "amado", "favorecido". Otros entienden que tiene su etimología en la voz latina "Alphonsus". Ahora bien; en opinión de ilustres tratadistas, el primer solar del apellido A. tenía origen godo y procedía de Desiderio o Teuderio, sobrino del rey Wamba, que por los años de 672 fundó solar en el valle de Valdivieso, hoy perteneciente a la provincia de Burgos. El blasón que desde muy antiguo trae esa casa de A. parece confirmar la indicada procedencia, pues dice: De mi Desiderio, godo, y del rey Wamba sobrino, procede esta casa en todo, por línea recta y camino. Otros autores, sin entrar a esclarecer el origen de los A., manifiestan que fue en Asturias donde radicó su primera casa, y que de ella se derivaron las que se crearon después en Burgos, León y ambas Castillas.
