Tuvo su primitivo solar en la ciudad francesa de Ceret, del departamento de los Pirineos Orientales, distante 32 kilómetros de Perpiñán y perteneciente al antiguo condado de Rosellón, que, como es sabido, era dependiente de la corona de Aragón. Precisamente en Ceret se celebró en 1660 la Conferencia de los Plenipotenciarios de Francia y España, que acordaron la definitiva delimitación de fronteras entre ambas naciones en el departamento de los Pirineos Orientales, quedando el Rosellón para Francia y realizando con tal acuerdo la más absurda de las expoliaciones del territorio legítimamente español, por su situación geográfica, su historia, sus tradiciones, lenguaje y sus costumbres. En 1282, Guillermo y Aya de Vernet, su esposa, otorgaron privilegios feudales a los habitantes de Ceret en nombre de los condes de Ampurias, que poseían aquella ciudad en pleno dominio.
