Cette famille paraît avoir eu pour berceau le vieux castel d'Assahune ou d'Assenne, entre Sant-Agrève et Châteauneuf en Boutières, détruit au cours des guerres anglaises, et dont il ne reste que les fondations. Son premier auteur connu est Raymon, qui, le 12 octobre 1273, fit à l'hôpital de Saint-Agrève une donation des plus importantes. C'est le même que ce Raymond, qui, en 1296, rendit hommage à l'évêque du Puy pour de nombreux mas et fiefs qu'il possédait dans le mandement de Chapteuil et dans celui de Beaujeu. Les Sahune, seigneurs de Maisonseule, se fondirent dans les Gruterie qui relevèrent leurs armes. Cette famille comprenait deux branches: 1° La branche de Villeneuve, près de Saint-Félicien, qui tomba en quenouille au XVIème siècle. 2° La branche de Maisonseule, qui tomba aussi en quenouille à la même époque, dans la personne de Phélise d'Assenne. Noble Raymond de Maisonseule, et Jeannette d'Ascottay eurent: 1° Marguerite de Maisonseule, mariée, en premières noces, à Audibert de Talaron, fils adoptif de noble Guillaume Rochette, par contrat du 30 avril 1342 (André Garaval et G. Brachier, notaires à Saint-Agrève). Devenue veuve et ayant hérité de son mari, elle épousa, en secondes noces, le 30 avril 1363, noble Ponce de Meyres, dont elle fut la première femme; 2° Jean de Maisonseule, marié, le 2 janvier 1363, à Isabeau de Mayres (contrat reçu Pierre Fumot, notaire). Monsieur Régis Tartary donne, dans la Revue du Vivarais, des notes sur cette famille – 1904, p. 106 et suivantes.
