Apellido portugués, con solar en la raya de Portugal y Galicia. Pasó a España y tuvo casas en Galicia, Santander y Segovia. De la casa de Galicia salieron ramas muy principales, que tuvieron asiento en la provincia de Pontevedra. Una se estableció en la ciudad de Túy, y de ella fué Juan de B., natural de Túy y Señor del coto de Tortores, que de su esposa doña Inés de Vega, natural de Valladolid, tuvo a Juan de B., segundo del nombre, bautizado en Túy en 1525. Fué soldado en las guerras de Flandes y de Italia. En 1557 pasó a América con las huestes de D. García de Mendoza, y fué el fundador de la rama de este linaje en Chile. En premio a sus servicios le fueron concedidas las Encomiendas de Tango, Malloco, Tobalaba y Legüeimo, las cuales le fueron confirmadas por Real cédula dada en Madrid el 30 de Noviembre de 1561. Establecido en Santiago de Chile fué su Alférez Real en 1561, su Regidor en 1567 y 1573 y su Alcalde en 1576. Casó dos veces: la primera entre 1557 y 1560 con doña Inés de Alderete, natural de Santiago de Chile, y la segunda con doña Mayor de Padilla, natural de Granada y fallecida en Santiago de Chile el 31 de Enero de 1604, siendo sepultada en la iglesia de la Merced. Del primer matrimonio fué hijo: Juan de B., tercero del nombre, que sigue. Del segundo matrimonio nació: María de B., natural de Santiago de Chile y casada en esta capital el 15 de Noviembre de 1600 con Juan Ortiz de Arraya, de igual naturaleza. ...
