E' una delle più antiche e nobili famiglie senesi, come ci viene dimostrato dai documenti e dalle opere degli storici, venendo annoverata fra quelle stirpi romane che, ai tempi delle invasioni barbariche , emigrarono e vennero a fissarsi in Siena. Certo si è che intorno al 1000 era già famiglia ricca e potente e copriva le maggiori cariche cittadine. Castellano di Crescenzio fu anch'egli varie volte console e durante il tempo del suo ufficio fu fatta la famosa Fonte Branda, come si può ancora leggere in una iscrizione marmorea dell'anno 1193, murata per l'occasione sulla fonte medesima.
