Antica ed illustre famiglia originaria della Mauritania che, giunta in tempi antichissimi in Bologna, ivi stabilì la propria dimora, rifulgendo nobiltà e propagandosi, poi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. Il ramo originario della famiglia fu conosciuto e tramandato con il cognome Bocchi ma le sue diramazioni assunsero diverse cognominizzazioni, tra cui Bocchese o Boccese.
