Apellido castellano, descendiente del Infante Don Vela de Aragón, hijo del Rey Don Sancho Ramírez. Probó su nobleza en las Ordenes de Santiago, Calatrava, Alcántara y San Juan de Jerusalén. Don Fernando C. de Hoyo, Maestro de Campo, Regidor de Tenerife, Castellano de Garachico, fue le primero poseedor de Mayorazgo instituido por su madre Doña Beatriz C., en virtud de Real facultad de 12 de julio de 1598, ante Alvaro de Quiñones. Doña Beatriz era hija de Don Hermando C., Regidor de Tenerife, Castellano de Garachico, en 1584, y de Doña Isabel Jorva, su mujer. Don Rodrigo C. de Aranda fue nombrado Marqués de Siete Iglesias, en 1614 y Conde de la Oliva en 1618. El título de Marqués de Casa C. fue concedido el 12 de enero de 1734 a don Ventura C. y Ceballos. En 24 de septiembre de 1737 se concedió el título de Conde de San Juan a don Francisco C. de Andrade. Don Carlos IV concedió el título de Conde de Villanueva de la Barca a don Francisco de Sales C. de la Barca y Riva Agüero, el 15 de diciembre de 1793. Don Alfonso XII concedió el título de Marqués de Algara de Gres, el 23 de diciembre de 1875, a don Manuel C. de la Barca y Herce y el de Marqués de Reinosa, el 1 de junio de 1878, a don a Fernando C. de la Barca y Collantes. Otra casa muy antigua. En realidad tiene este apellido origen vasco, porque procede del de Salcedo, y fué su progenitor un hijo bastardo de Fortún Sánchez de Salcedo, llamado Fortún Ortiz Calderón. Este último apellido se lo asignaron porque es tradición que nació como muerto y fué arrojado a un caldero, hasta que su llanto advirtió a los padres que vivía. Fué Privado del Señor de Vizcaya y Ricohombre de Castilla. Hizo las casas de Nograro y Guerendes, lingares del Ayuntamiento de Amurrio (Álava) y las de Quincoces, del partido de Villarcayo (Burgos).
