Es montañés este apellido. Procede del lugar de Carasa (cuyo nombre tomó), del Ayuntamiento de la Junta de Voto y partido judicial de Laredo (Santander). Lope García de Salazar dice en sus Bienandanzas e fortunas que el progenitor del linaje fué Rui Martínez de Solórzano (hijo de otro Rui, fundador de la casa y apellido de Solorzano), que tuvo dos hijos llamado Diego Ruiz y Juan Sánchez, los cuales se establecieron en el lugar de Carasa, tomando el nombre de éste por apellido. El Diego Ruiz procreó, a su vez, otros dos hijos; pero como el maryor de ellos sólo dejó a su muerte una hija, el segundo, que se llamó Rui Martínez de C., pasó a ser el pariente mayor del linaje, dejando descendencia que continuó el apellido. La casa solariega de los C. en dicho lugar "era un edificio antiguo de piedra, con una cerca, también de piedra, alrededor", según se consigna en el expediente de pruebas de nobleza de un caballero de Alcántara, descendiente de ese solar. A más de dicha casa tenían los de este linaje capilla propia con enterramiento, allado de la Epístola, en la iglesia del pueblo de Carasa. Ramas del citado solar pasaron a Castro-Urdiales, a Ramales, al Valle de Ruesga, al lugar de Padiérniga, del Ayuntamiento de Santander; al de Cicero, del partido de Santoña, y la las villas de Colindres y Laredo.
