Nobility crown CardigaIn concordanza con alcune ricostruzioni araldiche, la famiglia Cardiga sarebbe in realtà della medesima prosapia della casata Cardi fiorita in Mantova. La parzialmente differente cognominizzazione sarebbe imputabile ad errori di tradizione manoscritta ed anagrafica, soprattutto per quanto riguarda i rami della famiglia emigrati fuori dalla Penisola. Nel XV secolo, un Filippo fu ufficiale del Marchese di Mantova ed un Giorgio fu creato Cavaliere da Carlo V. Tommaso, avendo militato in Francia, ottenne anch'egli il titolo di cavaliere. Flaminio-Fortunato fu cancelliere ducale e poi segretario di Stato nel XVI secolo. Alfonso, tenente delle guardie ducali, fu poi Commissario successivamente di Marcarla e di Redondesso; Tommaso, suo fratello, fu capitano e commissario di Gonzaga nel secolo XVII. Altro ramo. Alessandro e Pietro, di Luigi C., chiesero l'ascrizione per giustizia alla nobiltá fiorentina, come appartenenti a famiglia abilitata ai primi onori della Repubblica.
