Antica ed assai nobile famiglia bolognese, la quale, secondo alcune ricostruzioni, discenderebbe dai Canedoli, illustre prosapia bolognese, ma, avendo prevalso la fazione dei Bentivogli, sarebbero stati, insieme ai Ghislieri, esiliati. Lodovico, Baldassarre e Lambertino si sarebbero dunque portati in Ravenna e, per meglio assicurarsi dalle insidie dei nemici, avrebbero mutato il cognome in Carrari.
