Refieren antiguas crónicas que este linaje tiene su origen en el de Carreño, de Asturias, porque fué su fundador un Alonso Carreño, perteneciente a la rama del solar asturiano de Carreño que pasó a establecerse al Valle de Carriedo, en la provincia de Santander. Añaden que dicho Alonso Carreño se halló en la toma de Carrión de los Condes (Palencia) cuando esta villa fué arrebatada a los moros en tiempo del Rey Don Alfonso, el Casto, y que por haber quedado establecido en ella tomó su nombre por apellido, siendo, por tanto, el fundador del linaje y familia C., cuyas ramas y casas más antiguas traen las mismas armas que su progenitor ostentaba. Lo cierto es que el linaje C. que indudablemente debió tomar por apellido el nombre de la antigua villa de C. de los Condes, florece en la historia de España desde tiempos muy antiguos. Lope López de C. y Diego Muñoz de C., Ricoshombres del Emperador Don Alonso VII, confirmaron sus privilegios por el año de 1147, figurando también en el mismo reinado Diego Martínez de C., que confirmó la donación hecha por el Emperador, a la iglesia de Toledo, de la mezquita mayor de Calatrava. Gil de C., vasallo de Don Enrique I, fué padre de Iñigo Gil de C., que se halló en la conquista de Sevilla con San Fernando, descendiendo de ellos Gonzalo C. y Mateo Ruiz C., que vivieron en el reinado de Don Pedro I.
