Família das mais antigas de Península, descendente dos Reis de Leão por D. Guterre Rodrigues de C., filho segundo de D. Rodrigo Dias das Astúrias, rico-homem, Conde de Oviedo, senhor do solar de Nava e Noronha, e de sua mulher, D. Maria Justos ou D. Ximena Gomes, como alguns autores pretendem. D. Guterre Rodrigues foi a primeira pessoa que usou o apelido de C.. O Conde D. Pedro diz no seu Nobiliário que era Conde e casado, mas não indica o nome de sua mulher. Forma seus filhos: D. Nuno Guterres de C., o das quatro mãos, vassalo do Reiu de Castela, de quem descendem os Castanhedas, e D. Rodrigo Guterres, o Beiçudo, progenitor dos Segóvias. Esta família, cujo apelido na Espanha se escreve Castañeda, passou a Portugal diversas vezes. Rui de C., fidalgo castelhano, diz-se que veio a este Reino por homecídio que cometera no da sua naturalidade e parece ser o que em 1502 foi para a Índia por capitão dum navio quando D. Vasco da Gama, pela segunda vez, embarcou para aquele Estado. O Rei D. Manuel lhe deu quitação, em 13-V-1504, da quantia de 171 932 reais, resultante da venda da especiaria de 7-XI-1507 a 28-VIII-1509. Recebeu-se duas vezes: a primeira com Guiomar de Proença, da qual não houve geração, e a segunda com Isabel de Proença, filha dum irmão da primeira mulher, de quem teve descendência. Parece que no reinado de D. Afonso V veio para Portugal Lopo Fernandes de C., castelhano, pai do conhecido historiados Fernão Lopes de C.. ...
