La famiglia discende dal gruppo signorile che ebbe nell'epoca feudale la signoria che ebbe nell'epoca feudale la signoria del luogo di Perego, e al quale appartenne anche l'arcivescovo di Milano Leone da Perego (1241-1263). Fu specialmente illustre in un ramo avente per capostipite il magnifico signor Giacomo Perego: il figlio del predetto fu Gio. Luca, soprannominato Pozzo (donde il ramo assunse la denominazione Pozzi-Perego o Perego-Pozzo), condottiero sotto Carlo V imperatore, che lo decorò del titolo di milite e cavaliere aurato per sè e discendenti; ed altre persone delo stesso ramo furono ascritte al Collegio dei Giureconsulti di Milano. Un altro ramo, avente per capostipite un Francesco, che nel 1491 era uno dei deputati della Fabbrica del Duomo di Milano, fu dichiarato nobile con decreto del Tribunale Araldico del 22 sett. 1781.
