Apelido de origem patronímica, derivado do nome próprio Cristovão, cuja forma inicial manteve, como sucedeu com Garcia, ou Manuel, e ao contrário de outros como Rodrigues, significando filho de Rodrigo, Lopes filho de Lopo, Gonçalves filho de Gonçalo, etc. Isto é, começado a usar como sobrenome por alguém cujo pai recebeu em baptismo o nome Cristovão, transmitiu-o ele depois a seus filhos e netos já como apelido. Assim se formaram várias famílias não só em Portugal como em Espanha, em cujas Chancelarias, aliás, as armas que aqui se indicam foram usadas, tal como menciona o repertório de Blasones de la Comunidad Hispânica, de Vivente Cadenas. E Espanha alguns dos Cristobal ou Cristovão apresentaram provas da antiguidade do seu uso para ingresso nas Ordens de Santiago, Calatrava, etc. Em Portugal, outros ainda, obtiveram, pelos seus serviços, várias Mercês Régias. Tal foi o caso, durante a Restauração, de Dinis Cristovâo, cujo filho, Sebastião Fernandes Cristovão, natural da Vila de Pedrogão, recebe em 21.12.1661 o Foro de Cavaleiro da Casa Real com 700 Reis de Moradia, como já em 29.8.1655 obtivera o cargo de Espadeiro, em que sucedeu a seu tio Manuel Fernandes. Parentes destes seriam uns outros Cristovão, fixados na região lde Sernache desde o século XVI, centúria em que aí vivia Pedro Cristovão casado com Leonor Lopes, cujos filhos, Simão Cristovão e João Cristovão aí casam em 1561 e 1565: De uns e outros ficou descendência que deu continuidade ao uso do apelido não só em Portugal como no Brasil onde ainda hoje existem famílias deste apelido. ...
