Il nome di questa famiglia, assai influente, appare per la prima volta nel 1122 allorquando, trascorsi pochi decenni di autonomia comunale, Tortona volle sottrarsi definitivamente all'autorità imperiale seguendo l'esempio di altre città prima fra tutte Milano alla quale non tardò allearsi sapendola anch'essa nemica dei pavesi. Le casate più illustri e potenti del Tortonese, tra cui quella dei Cuschi, costituirono il "Comune Signorile di Tortona" consolidando l'ordinamento delle magistrature e relativi poteri giurisdizionali; da ciò l'attributo onorifico di "De Civitate Terdona" ai membri di dette casate. Nel 1126 nasce Pietro Cuschi che Alessandro III nel 1180 nomina abate del monastero di Rivalta; l'11 febbraio 1184 interviene all'investitura con la quale i canonici della cattedrale tortonese concedono in enfiteusi ai monaci di detto monastero alcune terre in Castellar Ponzano, si spegneva il 5 novembre 1188.
