Famiglia originaria di Modugno trapiantatasi a Bari nella seconda metà del secolo XVI. Venne aggregata a quel patriziato nel 1789, e nel 1805 iscritta al Registro delle P. Ch. del Regno nella persona di Stefano, di Giuseppe. Possedette la Baronia di Licignano. Altro ramo. Consigliere di Giustizia, ed Uditore di Rota a Genova. Baldassare che fu quindi Podestà di Reggio nel XVII secolo. Ultimo personaggio importante della famiglia fu Giambattista che lasciò i propri beni ed il cognome alle famiglie Ponticelli e Rampalli, ambedue di Castelnuovo. La famiglia alzò per arma. Di azzurro al leone d'oro, linguato di rosso, rivolto, ed accompagnato nel canton sinistro del capo da un aquilotto di nero. La presenza dell'arma e del motto nella bibliografia documentata della famiglia D' Ettole ci conferma l'avita nobiltà raggiunta dalla casata. Infatti l'origine del motto risale a circa il XIV secolo e deve essere ricercata in quei detti arguti ...
