Famiglia originaria di Amalfi, che si ritiene discenda da Sergio della repubblica amalfitana. Se ne hanno certe notizie dal X secolo. Fu annoverata dal 1200 fra le feudatarie del regno. Si trasferì in Sorrento e fece parte di quel patriziato nel seggio di Porta; indi a Napoli, dove fu aggregata nei due suoi rami al seggio di Nido ed a quello di Capuana, e di tale patriziato fece parte fino all'abolizione dei seggi, e fu perciò iscritta nel Libro d'oro della nobiltà napolitana.
