Famiglia originaria della Francia, che venne in Italia con Carlo I d'Angiò, allorchè Clemente IV lo investì del Regno di Napoli. Stabilitasi in Cosenza vi dimorò per oltre tre secoli, sempre nel godimento di quella nobiltà. Altobello di Francia, nel 1470, da Cosenza si trasferì a Monteleone ed il suo figluolo Giovanni Battista, essendo ereditiere di sì illustre stirpe, in Tropea stabilì la sua famiglia, che fu ammessa nel Sedile prima del 1567. Ricevuta nel S. M. O. Gerosolimitano per ben due volte, decorata dell'aureo cingolo militare ha goduto varie signorie, fra cui il nobil feudo del quondam Giorgio di Romania e quello di San Cassano. Alla memoranda battaglia di Lepanto un Giov. Tommaso di Francia combattè valorosamente e D. Giovanni d'Austria, a 30 ottobre 1572, da Messina gli spedì solenne elogio scritto. Molti altri personaggi illustri onorano questa casa e fra questi un Tommaso, Vescovo di Oria nel 1697 ...
