L'origine di tal cognominazzazione, al dir di illustri genealogisti, andrebbe ricercata in un nome della devozione tardo latina "Dei Libertus" (= il liberto di Dio, cioè colui che Dio ha reso vero uomo). In ogni modo, tal casato venne, verosimilmente, fregiato del cavalierato, in seguito alla partecipazione, sotto i vessilli aragonesi, connotata da coraggio e virtù, di un Carlo Di Liberto alla guerra d'Otranto, del 1481, contro gli Ottomani. Ma, d'altronde, la famiglia, sempre, riuscì a distinguersi, grazie agli elevati personaggi, a cui diede i natali.
