Fu portata nel reame di Napoli da Gionata, al quale l'imperatore Federico II, nel 1239, diede a custodire Gerardo Piacentino, che era stato preso in ostaggio nella guerra di Lombardia. I discendenti di Gionata si stabilirono in Chieti, Lecce e Barletta da donde poi diramarono in tutto il Regno. Questa famiglia ha infatti goduto nobiltà anche in Napoli fuori seggio nel 1475, in Trani, in Molfetta, in Capua, in Amantea ed in L'Aquila.
