Antica ed insigne famiglia nobile di Verona. Tommaso, nel 1355, da Cangrande della Scala, fu nominato tutore dei suoi figli ed esecutore testamentario, per cui fregiò lo stemma con la scala. Nel 1405,i membri di tale famiglia, furono aggregati al Consiglio nobile di Verona. Dai duchi di Mantova e Monferrato ebbero il titolo di marchese.
