Le prime notizie di questa famiglia, anticamente chiamata "Ciarlanti" oppure "de Ciarlantibus" rimontano al secolo XIV ed essa figura come una delle principali sostenitrici del partito demogratico, e quindi tra quelle che presero parti attiva alle grandi lotte tra Banderari e Cives che, verso la metà del millecinquecento, insanguinarono la città di Terni. Ha dato alla Patria varii priori e confalonieri nonchè valenti giuristi, quale Fabio cui il magistrato municipale affido' nel 1567 la difesa dei proprii diritti contro la Reverenda Camera Apostolica. La presenza del motto nella bibliografia documentata della famiglia ci conferma l'avita nobiltà raggiunta della casata. Infatti l'origine del motto risale a circa il XIV secolo e deve essere ricercata in quei detti arguti che venivano scritti sui vessilli o bandiere dei cavalieri, esposti alle finestre delle locande in cui questi alloggiavano, in occasione dei tornei, e durante i tornei stessi.
