L'origine del cognome di base (presente nelle forme "Rainaldus" e poi "Rinaldus" e "Ranaldus") è attestato in Italia a partire dal IX secolo. Si tratta di un nome proprio di origine germanica, composto da un primo elemento "ragan-" ( con significato di consiglio, decisione) e da un secondo elemento "waldas" (con significato di potente, capo). Annovera questa illustre casata personaggi di elevate virtù, ma la penuria delle scritture in quegli antichi secoli ci priva di quelle curiosità più nobili, che si possano desiderare. Tuttavia non si può tacere l'appartenenza a tal illustre casata di Ferdinando Diranalli (Nereto, 2 febbraio 1813-Pozzolatico, 10 giugno 189), celeberrimo personaggio, autore di non poche opere, che si distinse in tutti i campi dello scibile.
