Este apellido se difundió por toda España desde tiempos muy antiguos. Lo llevan familias originarias de distintas casas y regiones, no existiendo entre muchas de ellas ningún nexo de parentesco. Algunas de esas familias proceden del Rosellón y de Cataluña. En Barcelona hubo una casa solar en Oliva muy antigua y noble. Juan Oliva era del Real Consejo en Barcelona, en fines del siglo XV, y Antonio Oliva, doncel y regente de la real Audiencia en dicha ciudad catalana, en mediados del siglo XVI. Otras tuvieron su asiento en Valencia y en Mallorca. Mosén Jaime Febrer hace mención de Pedro de Oliva, del que dice que pasó desde Tudela de Navarra a la conquista de Valencia, sirviendo al Rey de Aragón don Jaime I. Añade "que hizo presas de importancia, asaltando por las noches a los centinelas moros, valido de sus fuerzas; de cuyas acciones le resultaban grandes ganancias, pues los vendía como esclavos".
