Nobility crown ElcanoAutorizados genealogistas hablan de tres casas de E., sitas en tierras de Aya, del partido judicial de Azpéitia (Guipúzcoa), y afirman que las tres tuvieron el mismo origen, aunque difieren, no obstante, en los blasones. Una de esas casas de tierra de Aya se llamó E.-Barrena, y de ella debió proceder la familia López del Cano, de la villa de Peñacerrada, en Álava, como lo indican sus armas. Otra casa hubo en la jurisdicción de la villa de Guetaria, del mismo partido de Azpéitia, de reconocida nobleza, de la que fué descendiente el famoso navegante Juan Sebastián E., natural de Guetaria. Es corriente apellidar a este ilustre marino Juan Sebastián del Cano, y así se ve escrito en muchas historias y biografías, pero su verdadero apellido era E., porque este era el nombre de la casa solar y linaje a que pertenecía. En Navarra hubo también casa y palacio de E., en el lugar de Elcano (cuyo nombre tomó), del Ayuntamiento de Egües y partido judicial de Aoiz. Algunas líneas de ese palacio se apellidaron Delcano y Cano. ...
