L'Angius (Famiglie nobili, IV, 557) fa risalire la genealogia della famiglia ad epoche remote, riattaccando i Fantoni biellesi con quelli che si dicevano di S. Antonino e col ramo dei celebri medici. Le notizie sicure cominciano con Paolo, marito di Gentile Lucia Avogadro di Vigliano e padre dell'avvocato Giovanni Antonio, che acquistava dagli Avogadro punti di Valengo, Vigliano e Montecavallo e ne veniva investito il 13 marzo 1686. Sposò, in prime nozze, Anna Francesca Belzetti di Murazzano, e in seconde nozze (Torino 25 gennaio 1706) Clemenza Maria Garretti di Ferrere. Ne ebbe 5 figli, fra cui Carlo Giuseppe, continuatore della linea, e Giovanni Paolo (deceduto a Biella, 10 agosto 1762), padre di Carlo Gaetano, che fu conte di Baio per investitura 4 giugno 1776.
