Antica ed assai nobile famiglia abruzzese, con residenza in L'Aquila e possidente dei feudi Monte de Risi e Collegato, con titolo baronale, già notabile all'epoca della fondazione della città medesima, cioè verso la metà del secolo XIII. L'origine di tal cognominizzazione, però, secondo quanto ci viene tramandato, andrebbe ricercata nell'omonimo nome proprio, ovvero in un Fidanza, maestro de' Passi in Abruzzo e regio consigliere di Re Roberto di Napoli; del quale Fidanza si ha notizia nel 1327 e 1331. Tuttavia, le cronache aquilane riportano che discese proprio dalla nobile casata abruzzese il celeberrimo San Bonaventura da Bagnoregio (o Bagnorea)m al secolo Giovanni Fidanza (Bagnoregio, 1217/1221 circa – Lione, 15 luglio 1274), cardinale, filosofo e teologo italiano. Soprannominato Doctor Seraphicus, insegnò alla Sorbona di Parigi e fu amico di san Tommaso d'Aquino.
