Il primo personaggio di cui si ha notizia è un Gualdo Formica, gentiluomo Messinese, il quale, secondo gli atti di Notar Luca di Milazzo, ebbe per moglie la figlia di Bernardo Scarano, Barone della medesima città. Questi, impiegandosi a' servigi del Re Federico II, si casò nella città di Catania con Berta, figlia di Giuliano d'Augusta, Barone Catanese, con la quale procreò Pietro, nominato tra i Baroni del servigio militare del Re Ludovico, e Giovanni. Da Pietro nacque Gualdo che, per seguitare alcuni Baroni ribelli, gli furono confiscati, dal Re Federico III, tutti i beni, indi riacquistati da Giovanni, nel 1371.
