Antica famiglia corsa, di origine fiorentina, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. Un Taddeo Francescangeli, al principio del secolo XIV, passò in Corsica, ove i suoi discendenti sostennero importanti uffici militari e civili per conto della Repubblica di Genova, alla quale rimasero costantemente fedeli, durante i moti insurrezionali dell'isola; motivo che, però, gli obbligò a trasferirsi per qualche tempo nel continente. Quando, nel 1768, la Corsica fu unita alla Francia, Giuseppe Francescangeli, Presidente del tribunale di Savona, fu nominato Giudice Reale della città e giurisdizione di Bastìa e consigliere del Re; nel 1789 fu Presidente dell'Assemblea corsa agli Stati Generali. Dopo l'occupazione inglese dell'isola si ritirò in Francia ove gli venne affidato l'ufficio di Commissario di guerra nell'esercito delle Alpi. Morì nel 1795. Suo figlio Gio. Battista, nato a Bastia il 5 dicembre 1766, iniziò la carriera delle armi nel 1793, nell'esercito repubblicano, e si distinse grandemente ...
