Nombre originado en el apodo que el italiano Juan Bernardone dio a su hijo, el futuro san Francisco de Asís, "francés". En su ciudad natal, el 3 de octubre de 1226, habiéndose hecho desnudar y extender sobre el duro suelo, una vez oída la lectura de la Pasión según san Juan, murió san Francisco de Asís.
