The surname 'Galloway' originates from Scotland. It is derived from the regional name from the area so called in South West Scotland, whose name derives from the Gaelic word 'gall' meaning 'foreigner' and 'Gaidhel' in Gaelic from the eighth century or before it was a province of Anglican Northumbria. Its Gaelic inhabitants were known as 'the foreign Gaelic's', who from the nineth century onward tended to be allied with the Norsemen rather than with their fellow Gaelic's.
