La famiglia Gazzei ebbe per capostipite non un Arrigo, di Mazzeo, ambasciatore per il Comune di Firenze nel 1348 a Roma, come fu asserito da alcuni, ma bensì un Mazzeo di Ghigo originario di Carmignano, dove essa aveva possedimenti, e dimorante in Prato nel 1356. Da lui nacque Ser Lapo nel 1350, il quale alla perizia delle leggi unì una buona coltura letteraria e una grande onestà di costumi. Egli fu notaro della Signoria nel 1383 e andò in ambasceria a Venezia nel 1386 e a Genova nel 1389. Interessantissime per il contenuto e per la forma sono le sue molte lettere, pubblicate da Cesare Guasti, dirette a Francesco Datini, il celebre e ricchissimo mercante pratese, che egli esortava di continuo a vivere santamente e che persuase alla fondazione del Ceppo di Prato, opera pia che tutt'ora sussiste con grande beneficio dei poveri.
