Il Franchi pone alla famiglia Grandolfi un Vinciprova di Ghisiliero, operaio di S. Jacopo nel 1219 e nel 1222. A Grandolfi de' Ghisilieri, nato a Pistoia nel 1080 e abitante in Pisa, fu dai Pisani affidato il comando di numerosa armata navale nel 1114, con la quale egli conquistò le Baleari scacciandone i Saraceni. Il nome Grandolfi sembra fosse un soprannome dato per l'alta statura, e che fosse dopo adottato dai discendenti come nome proprio, in ricordo della gloria dell'antenato: si rileva infatti da un instrumento del Novembre 1222 che un Grandolfi Ghisilieri ricevette da Passalacqua e Guittoncino, suoi fratelli, lire cento pisane per sua parte della casa paterna in Pistoia.
