Diese Entwicklung wird dadurch befördert, daß der Name des Vogels Greif früh an "greifen" angelehnt wird, wie denn auch in der Heraldik die ursprüngliche Löwentatzen des Fabelwesens zu mächtigen Krallen ausgestaltet werden. Und gelegentlich zu dem Ortsname Greif (Nord/Schlesien). - Vereinzelt bleibt zu beachten, daß mittelniederdeutsch greve mit Griffe wechseln kann.
