Noble y antiguo apellido oriundo de Galicia, de donde pasó a Murcia, Andalucía y Castilla. Desciende del linaje "Gallego", que dimana a su vez del Conde Don Ramón de Romaes, hijo natural de Don Fruela I. La ascendencia directa de los Fajardos, según antorizados genealogista, es así: El Rey Don Fruela I tuvo, fuera del matrimonio, entre otros hijos, al Conde Don Ramón de Romaes, llamado también Veremundo o Bermudo, que fue progenitor del Conde Don Rodrigo Romaes, que sigue la línae y de Juana Romaes, mujer del Conde Don Mendo de Rausona (hermano de Desiderio, último rey longobardo de Italia), con numerosa sucesión. Nieto del referido Conde Don Rodrigo Romaes, fue el Conde Don Ramón Romaes, tercero del nombre, Conde de Monterroso, que contrajo matrimonio don Doña Milia, Infante de Inglaterra. Residió este matrimonio en el Reino de Galicia, fundando Casa en la Villa de Santa Marta de Ortigueira, en la provincia de La Coruña. Un descendiente de los Condes de Monterroso fue Pedro Yánez Gallego, Señor de Santa Marta de Ortigueira, primero en usar el sobrenombre de Fajardo o Faxardo, convertido luego en apellido de sus descendientes. Refiere la leyenda que adquiró dicho sobrenombre por haber vencido en desafío a un moro, en lucha de brazos, que llamaban a la sazón fajar y se pronunciaba fajiardo. Salazar y Castro refiere "que le llamaron F. los moros por la palabra Faxchard, que vale tanto como cerro fuerte". En la isla de Lanzarote, ezisten varias familias de este mismo apellido. ...
