O apelido é de origem geográfica, por ser precedido de preposição, mas o lugar de onde foi tirado, se era em Portugal, já não existe há século. E, porém, provável que provenha dos Reinos hispânicos, porque o facto de se encontrar escrito com z e con ss indica pronúncia espanhola Há, presentemente, em Portugal, o apelido G., cujas afinidades com aquele se desconhecem, embora ele corresponda a uma das suas antigas formas escritas: Guarizo. A pessoa mais antiga que se encontra deste apelido é Afonso Martins de G., que tomou o partido de D. João I de Portugal contra o de Castela. Seus sogros a suas cunhadas, Maria Afonso e Brites Afonso, passaram para o partido contrário, pelo que o Rei de Portugal lhes confiscou os bens móveis e de raiz que tinham em Lisboa e em quaisquer outros lugares, o que fez por Carta de 3-V-1384, dando-os ao referido Afonso Martins de G.. O mesmo Rei lhe fez, também, mercê de todos os bens móveis e de rais que Rui Fernandes tinha em Povos, na Castanheira, em Aldeia Galega e em outros quaisquer lugares, por se ter passado a Castela, perdendo-os, doação que tem a data de 5 de Janeiro do mesmo ano.
