Famille noble du Poitou. Entre les membres les plus célèbres on signale: Jean, receveur général des deniers de Bretagne en 1660. Fondu en 1760 dans Lyrot. On trouve autres branches de cette famille dès le XVéme siècle, à Aubenas où avait possédé le fief et château de Saint-Paulet, dans l'Uzège. Louise est rappelée avec noble Bernard de Barrès du Pouzin son mari, dans le contrat de mariage, du 6 mars 1486, de Guillaume de Barrès, écuyer, seigneur du Molard, leur fils, avec Gabrielle de Merles. La réunion des noms et armes de Molard et de Barrès a dû s'opérer à cette époque, ce qui a amené la différence entre les armes des deux branches de Barrès, en Vivarais. Il semble cependant que cette famille ne fut pas seule importante de ce nom dans notre province ou qu'elle ne s'éteignit de la cathédrale de Viviers, du nom d'Imbert. Il existait également un ministre protestant du nom d'Imbert, à Vallon en 1596.
