Questa casata ha per capostipite un Zanino de Barberis, padre di Giovanni, cameriere ducale nel 1457, assai caro a Francesco I Sforza, duca di Milano. Egli nel 1460 ebbe in donazione i beni di Cavacurta, già appartenenti ad Innocenzo Cotta che era stato dichiarato ribelle. Suo figlio Carlo prese in moglie Laura de Colli, figlia del consigliere ducale Berardo. Da questi discese per varie generazioni Carlo Francesco, che per decreto 23 settembre 1773 del tribunale araldico ottenne l'iscrizione della fam. sua nel catalogo delle casate nobili e la delineazione dello stemma nel codice araldico. Vennero confermati nell'antica nobiltà con sovr. risoluzione 20 novembre 1825 nella persona di Carlo Francesco, degli figli suoi Alessandro e Ferdinando, segretario di Governo ed ebbero la loro sepoltura nella cappella della Beata Vergine nella chiesa dei Minori Osservanti in Maleo con epigrafe portante la data del 1497 e l'arma gentilizia.
