Se dice en los Códices de García de Salazar que el solar de este apellido radicó en el lugar de Maturana, del Ayuntamiento de Barrundia y partido judicial de Vitoria (Álava). Se conoce una donación del año 1080, ante Notario, en la que figura como testigo Sancho Martínez de M., en concepto de caballero hijodalgo de sangre y solar conocido. Solió usarse este apellido a través de los tiempos precedido de los patronímicos Martínez, López y Sáez, formando uno compuesto como Martínez de M., etc. Ello obedeció a una costumbre muy antigua y muy extendida, de tomar como apelativo o sobrenombre, el de lugar donde se moraba, o se poseía Señorío y bienes. Los Martínez y los López de M. poseyeron bienes raíces hasta nuestros días en los pueblos de Mendijur, Orenin, Garayo, Azúa, Arbulo, Argomániz, etc., todos cercanos o limítrofes al de M., y radicaron en ellos. Moraron también en Vitoria, y las casas que poseyeron en esta ciudad se encontraban en la calle de la Cuchillería, primera vecindad, con su escudo en la puerta. La que perteneció a los López de M. hasta 1754, fué vendida al Canónigo don JJosé Joaquín de Abajo, quien sustituyó el escudo por el de su varonía. Los Martínez de M. tuvieron la suya en la calle de la Herrería, número 61, segunda vecindad, hasta que la vendió a don Pedro Soto su última poseedora doña Andrea M. de Pinillos y Martínez de M.
