Alcuni storici (Ganduccio, Recco, Buonaroti, ecc.) reputano che questa famiglia sia derivata da una delle tante ramificazioni della famiglia Fieschi, conti di Lavagna, e si basano su un albero genealogico di detta famiglia Fieschi, presentato nell'anno 1253 a Papa Innocenzo IV (Sinibaldo Fieschi) nel quale un ramo termina con un Guirardus e con questa annotazione: "Aquo illi de sigestro descendunt". Da documenti certi infatti risulta che questi sono originari di Sestri Levante, ov'ebbero passioni e signoria nella così detta Isola di Sestri che cedettero alla Repubblica di Genova nel 22 dicembre 1430. Con Decreto del Senato in pari data ottennero amplissimi privilegi ed immunità. Si stabilirono dopo ciò in Genova imparentandosi con le famiglie Doria, De Mari, Salvago, Oldoini, ecc. Nel 1586, in seguito al riordinamento della nobiltà genovese fatto da Andrea Doria nel 1528, furono ascritti nell'Albergo Salvago.
