I Medici, a quanto asseriscono gli storici milanesi Moriggia e Giulini, godevano già d'alta considerazione fino dal secolo XI, considerazione che s'accrebbe durante l'epoca comunale. Il Zazzera fa discenderne i Medici di Milano dal capostipite della linea fiorentina e così il Ripamonti ed il Missaglia. Ma sono contradetti dal Muratori, che attribuisce ai Medici origini non illustri. La verità è che la casata era compresa nella matricola d'Ottone Visconti. Alla fine del XIII secolo essa era divisa in 5 diramazioni: Medici di Porta Ticinese, Medici di Casorezzo, Medici di Nosigia, Medici d'Albairate e Medici di Novate. La prima diramazione, la più potente, dimorava nella contrada omonima in parrocchia di S.Sisto.
