Tale cognominizzazione dovrebbe derivare, attraverso modificazioni di fonetica dialettale, dal cognome spagnolo Perricon, originatosi da forme dialettali catalane basate sul termine perro (=cane). Numerosi personaggi di tale cognome si trovano di sovente menzionati in documenti ed atti notarili, fin dai secoli trascorsi, dai quali appare che erano di condizione agiata e cospicua. Un Filiberto, calermitano palermitano, nel secolo decimo ottavo, fu professore della Santa Scrittura in Padova; un P. Mericone è citato come "assai dotto nelle filosofie" in uno scritto dell'abate Pettinelli, del 1801.
