XII appare segnalata con distintivi di onore nella terra di Teglio, che risultò dalla fusione del consortile nobiliare di Besta e della vicina di Verrida. Alla fine del sec. XIII era già divisa in diversi rami, che andarono spenti o mutarono cognome. Emergeva tra tutti il ceppo di Martino, morto avanti il 1290, il cui figlio Protaso fu investito a titolo di feudo onorifico di parecchi beni e regalie che l'arcivescovo di Milano possedeva nel territorio di Teglio, Nigola e Tresivio. Dello stesso feudo gentile, spettante alla famiglia da tempo immemorabile, fu investito il 26 agosto 1444 Mestaino. Di lui furono figli Giovanni, Alvise, Giacomo, Matteo ed Azzo, che il duca di Milano creò propri familiari il 7 febbraio 1458.
