Trae questa famiglia la sua origine da Pinerolo, da dove si trasferì a Villafranca, e Pietro, che viveva agli inizi del secolo XIII, ne sarebbe il capostipite. E' certo famiglia antichissima e a Pinerolo, nei tempi più remoti, ebbe posizione ragguardevole. Agli inizi del secolo XVI già se ne ha menzione in Villafranca. Il medico Marcantonio consegnò l'arma nel 1614, e contemporanea consegna eseguirono il dottore di leggi Bernardo, e il capitano Stefano, che fu governatore del castello di Villafranca. Il medico Gerolamo Bernardino consegnò l'arma nel 1687. L'avvocato Gerolamo Bernardo fu infeudato di Bourcet l'8 marzo 1756 e investito col titolo comitale il 21 maggio. Suo figlio Ignazio (dec. Torino, 8 maggio 1821) fu investito il 6 marzo 1778, e il 12 luglio 1812 ebbe l'autorizzazione di provvedersi di un titolo imperiale.
