Famiglia antichissima oriunda da Beatino (Biella) ed il cui capostipite sarebbe un Bartolomeo che viveva nel sec. IX. Si vuole attaccare questa illustre casata al grande ceppo dei Manfedingi. L'ipotesi è attendibile, ma è tuttora priva del conforto della prova. Figlio di detto Bartolomeo sarebbe stato Oberto, dal quale sarebbe nato Manfredo, che avrebbe procreato Oberto e Filippo. Il primo sarebbe stato lo stipite della linea a detta di Cunico, Filippo di quella di Marcorengo. Quest'ultimo, unitamente al fratello, avrebbe ottenuto dal vescovo di Vercelli, con diploma del 18 ott. 978, l'investitura della famiglia, Marcorengo, Ozzano, Villamiroglio e Montiggio. Assai incerta è l'autenticità di questo diploma vescovile; è cosa sicura invece che questi feudi già in epoca remotissima appartenevano a questa famiglia, come ne fanno fede le investiture ottenute dai marchesi di Monferrato.
