Este apellido está formado por una de las ramas que iniciaron la Casa de Lara. El famoso Conde Don Manrique de Lara, Vizconde de Narbona, Alférez Mayor del Emperador Don Alonso VII, Señor de los Honores de Avilla, Baeza y Toledo, tutor del Rey Don Alonso VII de Castilla y Gobernador de sus Reinos, fue primer Señor de M. por sentencia arbitral entre el Rey de Castilla y el de Aragón en 1203. El Conde Don Manrique era hijo de Don Pedro González, Conde y Señor de Lara, de Medina de la Torre, Mormojón, Dueñas y Tariego, célebre por sus hechos y amores con la Reina Doña Urraca, descendiente legítimo de los Condes de Castilla, de los Reyes de Asturias y de los antiguos Reyes godos. Una de las ramas más ilustres de esta familia, pobló Ubeda en el año 1285 y fue allí cabeza de uno de los dos bandos en que estaba dividida la Nobleza. De ella se originaron las Casas de los Señores del Postigo de Ubeda (hoy Marqueses de la Rambla, Grandes de España) y otras no menos ilustres, cuyos hombres ses han distinguido en las armas, las letras y sus eminentes servicios al Trono. La Casa de M. en Canarias que se estableció en la islas hace más de tres siglos, desciende legítimamente de la rama de Ubeda, habiendo formado a su vez dos importantes ramas: la de M.
