Les Montagut alias Montaigu ou Montagu-Bouzols étaient connus en Vivarais dès le XIIème siècle avec la qualification de chevaliers. Les ruines de leur château se voient encore sur la montagne qui domine Saint-Sauveur-de-Montagut. Ils possédèrent, au XIVème siècle, le château de La Tour, près de Saint-Pierreville, qu'ils avaient acquis, en 1280, de Sylvion de Tournon et qu'ils conservèrent jusqu'en 1385, époque où il passa dans la maison de Poinsac, originaire du Velay, par le mariage de Catherine avec un cadet de Poinsac. Cette grande et illustre maison fournit de nombreux chevaliers de Malte à la Langue de Provence et à celle d'Auvergne. Guérin, fut grand maréchal de l'ordre, élu en 1208. Elle donna aussi douze chanoines comtes de Brioude, 1256-1655, plusieurs maréchaux de camp, lieutenants-généraux de la Basse-Auvergne, dont un commandeur de l'ordre de Saint-Louis. Les Montagu prouvèrent leur filiation depuis Reymond qui testa le 5 février 1450, ils furent maintenusdans leur noblesse par jugement souverain, du 12 septembre 1668.
