Nobilissimo casato spagnolo, con prima residenza in Badajoz, ove si distinse con quel Juan, di Hernando de Montoya e di Catalina Sánchez, intrepido esploratore, attivo in politico e giudice, scomparso nel 1583. Nel XVII secolo, tal casato, passò, assumendo il predicato di Montoya, inizialmente in Napoli e, poi, in Barletta, al cui patriziato venne ascritto. L'aggregazione fu fatta dal notaio Bartolomeo Auditorio, il 1 marzo 1602, e ratificata poi dalla medesima nobiltà barlettana il 4 ottobre 1634.
